Layer Cake Bakery - Irvine, CA

I'll admit it - I've been sampling Layer Cake Bakery's French macarons for a couple weeks now. This is my third visit. They have a tantalizing selection of wonderful pastries - red velvet cupcakes, apple turnovers, a variety of cakes (including a Tiramisu cake which I will have to try at some point!) and a rainbow of French macarons.

My husband and I picked out our treats for the day. I chose a chocolate ganache macaron and a strawberry macaron. My husband chose a lemon and a passion fruit macaron.

They come out of the case chilled and I must tell anyone who is new to French macarons, they are NOT meant to be eaten cold! Let them sit at room temperature for an hour or so and then indulge. My chocolate ganache was perfection - a rich chocolatey flavor with the crispy outer shell of the cookie - divine. The strawberry was also fantastic in the way that it didn't taste artificial (I despise artificial fruit flavors) and was not overly sweet. My husband liked the passion fruit best of all and of all the macarons he has tried from this particular bakery, it was his new favorite.

Layer Cake is a family owned business run by two sisters. They are a scratch bakery which and you can catch them whipping up the next batch of pastries at any time. The environment is warm and friendly, and they also have lunch options to go along with your dessert if you choose to do so. I stop in every Sunday for a new variety of macarons to take home and am always pleased with the selection and quality of products.
